The Importance of Skin Checks in Australia

It is a fact that the sun’s UV index is strong in Australia, which makes it very important for Australians to keep an eye on their skin. Sun exposure is the cause of around 99% of non-melanoma skin cancers and 95% of melanoma in Australia. Knowing a skin cancer clinic near you is essential for quickly treating skin cancer. With us, you can find your nearest skin cancer clinic and book a regular full-body skin check as a preventative method for detecting and treating skin cancers. Book an appointment to see a skin cancer doctor today.

A skin check appointment is non-invasive and takes little time to complete. A doctor can quickly and efficiently perform skin cancer check-ups for you, looking for melanoma and any other worrying signs during your skin check. You can contact us to book your skin cancer check today.

What to look for the detection of Skin Cancer

Skin cancers can develop in both sun-exposed and non-exposed areas of your skin. There are a few indicators you can watch for to alert you to the need to see a skin doctor, commonly known as the ABCDEs of Melanoma. You can observe and perform your mole check at home by monitoring any changes in moles and looking for these signs, but none of these replaces the critical need for a professional skin check.

Asymmetry: Most skin cancer is asymmetrical. The two halves are different if you draw a line through the middle of the lesion.

Border: Skin cancer borders are uneven and may have scalloped or notched edges, while common moles have a more regular, smooth edge.

Colour: Multiple colours on a mole or lesion are a warning sign. General moles are usually a single shade of brown, but one that has developed into a skin cancer may have different shades of tan, brown or black.

Diameter or Dark: While it is ideal for detecting skin cancer when small, it is a warning sign if a lesion is the size of a pencil eraser (about 6 mm) or larger. Some experts say it is also essential to look for skin lesions that are darker than others, regardless of size. In rare cases, there are amelanotic Melanomas which are colourless skin cancers.

Evolving: Any change in size, shape, colour, or elevation of a mole spot on your skin, or any new symptom, such as bleeding, itching or crusting, may be a warning sign.

Types of Skin Cancer

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most common but least dangerous form of skin cancer. It is slow-growing and usually found on the upper body, head, and neck. It may appear as a lump or dry, scaly area. A Basal Cell Carcinoma can be red, pale or pearly in colour. As it grows, it may ulcerate or appear like a sore that does not heal properly.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is a type of skin cancer that is not as dangerous as melanoma but may spread to other body parts if not treated. It grows over some months and appears on skin regularly exposed to the sun. A Squamous Cell Carcinoma can be a thickened, red, scaly spot that may bleed easily, crust or ulcerate.
